Family Circle Sessions will take place within our regular KMM Community meetings. It is not a separate structure or a new layer of governance. We are building the KMM Family Circle simply based on who shows up, takes part, and contributes to the discussion. It is a dedicated space within those meetings where we focus on governance, share perspectives, and work through ideas together before decisions are finalized.
In doing this, we are asserting our inherent right to self-governance through Community. Over time, as participation strengthens and direction becomes clearer, the Family Circle Sessions may naturally evolve into a more formal governance structure shaped by the Community itself.
The Family Circle Sessions are about building governance that belongs to us. It is not something handed down by the Algonquins of Ontario or shaped by the Indian Act. It comes from who we are as KMM people, grounded in our families, our relationships, and our shared Community.
We asked you what you think, and you told us clearly. There is a range of views on how governance should look. Some of you support a community-wide council. Others support a hybrid model that brings together family and whole-of-community representation. Others support a family-based approach. That range of opinion makes sense. These are important decisions.
*KMM Family Circle Meetings are for Kijicho Manito Madaouskarini Community Members & authorized guests only.
